I’ll admit that Snuggle Puppy sounds a little gimmicky when you first hear about it. It’s a stuffed dog with a fake heartbeat and a heat pack that’s supposed to help puppies sleep. For around $40.
I can understand looking at that description and thinking, Or I could buy a stuffed animal for ten bucks. Apparently, plenty of Snuggle Puppy owners had exactly the same thought. Then they tried it.
We dug through thousands of Snuggle Puppy reviews and owner experiences across Amazon listings in multiple countries, Chewy, Petco, Walmart, eBay, Reddit, and social media to find out whether the ridiculously popular heartbeat puppy actually lives up to its reputation.
The short answer?
No, I don’t think Snuggle Puppy is a gimmick.
But I also don’t think it’s magic, and there’s a difference between “this works remarkably well for a lot of dogs” and “this will definitely work for yours.” Here’s what we found.

TL;DR: Is Snuggle Puppy Worth It?
For many puppies and anxious dogs, yes. What impressed me wasn’t simply the number of positive reviews. Popular products get plenty of those.
It was how often the same experiences showed up in completely separate groups of owners.
People in the United States, Canada, the UK, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Australia describe puppies settling faster, sleeping longer, and becoming surprisingly attached to their Snuggle Puppies.
We also found adults, seniors, grieving dogs, and dogs recovering from surgery using them.
Even more interesting were all the reviewers who openly admitted they thought Snuggle Puppy sounded like a waste of money before buying one.
Those are my favorite reviews, because I trust a converted skeptic a little more than someone who was already sold before the Amazon box arrived.
How We Researched Snuggle Puppy Reviews
Rather than grabbing a handful of glowing reviews from one retailer, we looked across multiple platforms and countries.
That included Amazon’s US, Canadian, UK, German, Spanish, Mexican, and Australian listings, along with reviews and owner discussions on sites including Chewy, Petco, Walmart, eBay, Reddit, and TikTok.
We paid particular attention to detailed reviews and those that other shoppers marked as helpful.
We also looked at the middle-of-the-road and negative reviews because those tell you things a five-star rating can’t.
What didn’t work? What broke? What scared the dog? Did owners find a solution?
And most importantly, did the same patterns keep showing up? They did.
My Favorite Snuggle Puppy Review Spans Seven Years
Of everything we read, one Amazon review stood out. Not because it was particularly dramatic, but because the owner kept coming back and updating it.
The original review started after the owner brought home a new puppy:
“He slept through the night which I totally did not expect.”
That alone isn’t particularly unusual among Snuggle Puppy reviews.
What makes this one interesting is what happened afterward.
In a May 2017 update, the owner said the dog was still sleeping with his Snuggle Puppy every night even though the heartbeat and warmer were long gone. It traveled with him to boarding and on trips.
Five years later, another update said the toy was still hanging in there.
Then came the seven-year update.
The owner’s neighbors got a puppy who cried throughout her first night in the crate. They gave her a Snuggle Puppy, and according to the reviewer:
“She hears the heartbeat and goes directly into her crate!”
The reviewer eventually bought their own dog a replacement, too.
The best part? Apparently, the human was sentimental about replacing his original puppy toy. The dog was not.
“I was being sentimental as it was the toy I had with me when I picked him up from the breeder, but apparently he doesn’t care.”
Fair enough.
That review, titled “Got us through the first night,” had 1,880 helpful votes on Amazon.com when the research was compiled.
Seven years is a pretty impressive run for something that started out as a way to get through one night.
The Skeptics Were Everywhere
One of the funniest recurring themes in these reviews is just how many people apparently bought Snuggle Puppy while fully expecting it to be nonsense.
A Petco reviewer put it plainly:
“I was sure it would be a gimmick and a waste of money. Boy was I wrong.”
She said her dog stopped making a peep after she introduced it.
A Canadian Amazon reviewer, Cornelious Trebel, was skeptical both about whether the concept would work and whether the toy would hold up. His verdict was that it had “pleasantly surprised me.”
Another Canadian reviewer, D. Thompson, said their partner thought Snuggle Puppy was too expensive and a waste of money.
After using it?
“We both agree now that it is worth every penny.”
An Amazon.com reviewer titled her review “Was skeptical, now I love!”
And this isn’t just a North American phenomenon.
A reviewer on Amazon Spain wrote:
“No me lo creía hasta que lo ví.”
Or, roughly, I didn’t believe it until I saw it.
There’s something fairly persuasive about finding variations of “I thought this thing was ridiculous” in different languages.
The First-Night Stories Are Pretty Impressive
This is what most people are buying Snuggle Puppy for, so it’s also where we found the largest number of stories.
Tracy Vanderheyden wrote on Amazon Canada that her puppy was extremely upset in the crate on the first night.
After introducing Snuggle Puppy:
“She settled down immediately and slept all night long!!!”
Another Canadian owner, Sarah, was particularly worried because she lived in a condo and didn’t want her new puppy screaming for hours and disturbing the neighbors.
She reported about five minutes of crying before her puppy went to sleep. Then there’s Heather, who had just brought home an eight-week-old teacup Morkie:
“He slept all night! No whining or crying at all!”
She wanted the option to award 100 stars. Amazon has stubbornly refused to implement that rating system.
The same stories show up internationally. A reviewer in Mexico reported that his puppy didn’t cry at night.
German reviewer Tom Lechner wrote that his dog sleeps with Snuggle Puppy every night and, more importantly, sleeps through the night.
Obviously, these are individual owner experiences. Plenty of puppies aren’t going to sleep eight peaceful hours just because you tucked a stuffed dog beside them.
Still, when you’re seeing versions of the same story from owners who have no connection to one another, it’s worth paying attention.
Snuggle Puppy Isn’t Only Working for Eight-Week-Old Puppies
I expected most of the reviews to come from people bringing home young puppies. I didn’t expect to find so many older dogs.
One Amazon Canada reviewer bought Snuggle Puppy for a 14-year-old Dachshund.
According to her review:
“2 seconds later he passed right out on it.”
She added that she was happy it worked just as well for her senior dog.
Another owner tried one with her 10-year-old Beagle/German Shepherd mix despite the fact that the dog generally avoided toys. She came away convinced that her dog actually liked this one.
Then there was a seven-month-old Bernedoodle whose owners were dealing with separation anxiety. They reported that after introducing Snuggle Puppy, he stopped barking when left alone.
Amazon’s Q&A section includes similar reports involving adult dogs, including a three-year-old and a senior rescue Dachshund who was 12 when the owner started using it.
That’s why I wouldn’t put an expiration date on Snuggle Puppy.
The original reason for using it may change. A young puppy needs help transitioning away from his mother and littermates. An adult dog isn’t trying to recreate his litter at age seven.
But dogs don’t age out of finding familiar things comforting.
Owners Are Using It for Grief, Too
This was one of the more touching patterns we came across. A Canadian reviewer named Corrie-Anne bought Snuggle Puppy for her Chihuahua after her Black Lab died.
She specifically mentioned how realistic the heartbeat sounded.
It makes sense that some owners would try this. Dogs can absolutely respond to the loss of another animal in the household, and a warm, soft object with a rhythmic heartbeat may provide some comfort.
That doesn’t mean Snuggle Puppy is a treatment for grief, of course. It simply means it’s another situation where owners have found a use for it well beyond bringing home a new puppy.
Some Dogs Use It During Surgery Recovery
Another Canadian reviewer, Linda L., bought Snuggle Puppy for her seven-year-old Vizsla when the dog needed surgery.
She reported that after the procedure:
“The doctor told us that she used it for a pillow and was so calm when she awoke.”
The dog continued snuggling it for warmth afterward.
Again, that’s an owner report rather than a medical claim, but I like the idea of keeping a dog’s familiar comfort object around during stressful transitions.
If your dog is having surgery or receiving veterinary treatment, I’d obviously check with the clinic before sending anything along. Veterinary hospitals have their own rules about what can accompany patients.
Some Owners Keep Buying More
There’s another pattern that’s hard to miss. People don’t necessarily buy one Snuggle Puppy. They buy backups.
One reviewer was preparing to order several so there could be one upstairs, one downstairs, and one in reserve.
Another simply announced:
“We have 4 of these now.”
A Reddit user said:
“I buy one for everyone I know who gets a puppy.”
Canadian reviewer Connie R. had purchased three, first for her own puppy, then for a friend’s puppy, and finally for her son’s.
One eBay reviewer said their dog’s Snuggle Puppy was 12 years old and still being used.
Then there’s “Momma,” owned by Amazon Canada reviewer Wildkitty836.
After three years, Momma was missing an ear and her tongue. Gazoo still loved her.
That’s perhaps not the image Snuggle Puppy would choose for the product packaging, but it’s a pretty good endorsement from Gazoo.
Owners Have Figured Out a Few Tricks That Seem to Help
This is where things get especially useful.
Across reviews from different countries, we found owners independently describing similar ways of introducing Snuggle Puppy.
Add a familiar scent.
Some owners rubbed the plush against themselves or wrapped it in worn clothing before giving it to their dogs.
Others took the idea further. Amazon Mexico reviewer desancg had the puppy’s parents and littermates play with the Snuggle Puppy before bringing it home.
Another Amazon reviewer used a blanket carrying the scent of the puppy’s littermates along with the Snuggle Puppy to make the transition easier.
We can’t tell you from owner reviews how much scent changes the outcome. But it’s such a simple thing to try, and it comes up often enough that I would absolutely do it.
Make it part of bedtime.
Canadian reviewer Peanut80 recommended only giving the dog Snuggle Puppy at bedtime rather than leaving it available all day.
That’s another trick I like. It helps preserve the toy as something associated with settling down rather than giving your puppy eight unsupervised daytime hours to discover whether he can remove its spleen.
Introduce the heartbeat slowly.
Another owner hid the Snuggle Puppy under her shirt during calm, positive moments so her dog could become accustomed to the heartbeat before sleeping with it.
That’s particularly useful because not every dog likes the heartbeat immediately.
Now for the Less Glowing Snuggle Puppy Reviews
If Snuggle Puppy worked perfectly for every dog, I’d be far more suspicious. It doesn’t.
Some dogs are afraid of the heartbeat.
This is probably the biggest thing to know before buying one.
The heartbeat can be louder than you expect, and some dogs find it startling instead of soothing.
One owner bought Snuggle Puppy for a Staffy after the dog lost her Lab companion, only to discover that the heartbeat frightened her.
That doesn’t always mean the toy itself is a failure. You can introduce the plush without the heartbeat first and add it later once your dog is comfortable.
But yes, some dogs simply don’t like it.
It’s not cheap.
This is probably the most legitimate criticism. Snuggle Puppy typically costs considerably more than an ordinary stuffed animal, and replacement heat packs add an ongoing expense if you use them regularly.
Whether that’s worth it depends entirely on what you get from it. If your puppy couldn’t care less about Snuggle Puppy, $40 feels like a lot of money for a stuffed dog.
If it helps your new puppy settle at 11 p.m. instead of screaming until 3 a.m., suddenly $40 sounds much more reasonable.
Sleep has a way of altering one’s economic calculations.
What About Aggressive Chewers?
This is one situation where I’d be cautious. Snuggle Puppy contains a removable electronic heartbeat unit, and the disposable warming packs contain material that you absolutely don’t want your dog tearing open and swallowing.
If your dog routinely destroys plush toys, I wouldn’t leave Snuggle Puppy with him unsupervised until you know how he’ll treat it.
This isn’t really a criticism of the product. It’s just knowing your dog. Some dogs see a stuffed puppy and think friend.
Others see a challenge.
Who Is Snuggle Puppy Most Worth It For?
Based on the owner experiences we reviewed, I think it’s particularly worth considering for:
- Puppies going through their first nights away from their mother and littermates
- Puppies having trouble settling in a crate or sleeping area
- Dogs with anxiety who respond well to physical comfort
- Senior dogs who become restless at night
- Dogs grieving another animal in the household
- Dogs going through stressful changes
- Dogs recovering from procedures, when your veterinarian is comfortable with its use
- Deaf or blind dogs who may respond to the physical vibration and warmth
I’d have more tempered expectations if your dog simply wakes at night because he’s bored, needs to go outside, or has developed a sleep schedule that doesn’t match yours.
A stuffed heartbeat toy can’t solve every reason a dog wakes up. I’d also think twice before leaving it unsupervised with a dedicated toy destroyer.
And finally, accept the possibility that your dog simply won’t care. They’re inconvenient like that.
So, Is Snuggle Puppy a Gimmick?
After going through thousands of reviews, I don’t think so.
That doesn’t mean every glowing review proves the heartbeat itself caused a puppy to sleep through the night. Reviews aren’t controlled experiments. Puppies are adjusting to new homes, owners are simultaneously establishing routines, and plenty of other things are happening at the same time.
But that’s also why the overall pattern matters more to me than any individual five-star review.
- We found similar experiences across retailers, countries, breeds, ages, and situations.
- We found people who were skeptical before they bought it.
- We found dogs still sleeping with the same battered stuffed puppy years later.
- And, importantly, we found dogs who didn’t like it at all.
That’s about what I’d expect from a comfort product that actually works for a lot of dogs rather than a miracle product that supposedly works for everyone.
My verdict: Snuggle Puppy is worth trying if your dog has a reason to benefit from the comfort it provides.
Just don’t hand it to your puppy, flip on the heartbeat, and assume the rest takes care of itself.
