If you’ve ever topped up your dog’s bowl because those eyes were very convincing, this one’s for you. A 14-year Purina study found that dogs fed a quarter less food lived a median of 1.8 years longer than their littermates. And the easiest way I know to serve the right portion every single time is an automatic dog feeder.
Labrador littermates in the study ate the same food under the same care. The only difference was how much. The leaner dogs also developed arthritis much later. In human terms, that extra time works out to more than a decade.
Full disclosure: I love dogs, but I’m a cat owner. My cat Milo has uses two different types of PetSafe feeders, and this research is what made me see them as more than a convenience. Our editor Nicole has also been using these feeders with her dog Freya as well. Below is what the study found in plain English, how much to feed your dog, and the six automatic dog feeders I’d look at, plus five pre-portioned fresh dog foods for anyone who’d rather the food arrives already measured.

What a 14-Year Study Says About Portion Control
The Purina Life Span Study followed 48 Labrador retrievers from seven litters from 1987 to 2001. Dogs were paired by litter, sex and body weight. Both dogs in a pair ate the same food, and the lean-fed dog got 75% of what its partner ate. Here’s what eating a quarter less added up to:
- Median lifespan: 13.0 years for lean-fed dogs vs. 11.2 years for control-fed dogs.
- Arthritis: at age 8, 10% of lean dogs had arthritis in two or more joints. For control dogs it was 77%.
- Chronic conditions: lean dogs didn’t need long-term treatment until a median age of 12.0, compared with 9.9.
- Hips: half the control dogs showed hip arthritis on X-rays by age 6. Lean dogs didn’t reach that point until 12.
The part that stuck with me is how ordinary the control dogs were. Their body condition averaged about 6 to 7 on a 9-point scale, the dog most of us would call solid or big-boned. The lean dogs sat at the ideal 4 to 5. And the control group’s 11.2-year median is right in line with the average UK dog, which a VetCompass study of more than 30,000 dogs put at 11.23 years. They lived the way a lot of well-loved dogs live.
That’s a common picture. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention estimates that 59% of U.S. dogs are overweight or obese.
Newer research points the same way. A 2025 paper ran the original bloodwork through a “biological age” tool, and the lean dogs were biologically younger from about age 7, years before any difference in lifespan showed up. Each year a dog’s biological age ran ahead of its real age was linked to a 75% higher risk of death.
There’s also a real-world check. A 2019 study of more than 50,000 pet dogs across 12 breeds found that overweight dogs lived up to two and a half years less than dogs at a healthy weight. The gap ranged from about five months for male German Shepherds to two and a half years for male Yorkshire Terriers.
Fair disclosure: Nestlé Purina funded the original study, Nestlé Research scientists wrote the 2025 paper (they’ve also filed patents on the tool), and Mars Petcare’s WALTHAM Centre collaborated on the 2019 study. Pet food companies pay for a lot of this research. The findings still line up across different teams and methods, which is why I trust the direction.
Try the rib check
Run your flat hands along your dog’s sides. You should feel the ribs easily under a thin layer, about like the back of your hand. If you have to press to find them, ask your vet whether a smaller portion makes sense.

Are you a cat owner? The cat research tells a slightly different story, so cats are getting their own guide next.
How Much Food Should I Feed My Dog?
If you’re wondering how much you should feed your dog, start with your vet’s recommendation, then treat the feeding chart on the bag as a starting range rather than a rule. The right amount is whatever keeps your dog at a healthy body condition, and that changes with age, activity, and neutering.
- Get a target from your vet based on your dog’s ideal weight, not just current weight.
- Weigh one scoop on a kitchen scale. Most of us are surprised by how far our “one cup” is from an actual cup.
- Count treats as part of the day’s food. Many vets suggest keeping treats to about 10% of daily calories.
- Do the rib check every few weeks and adjust with your vet if things creep up.
- Start early. A 2025 study of 4.9 million dogs found that dogs who were overweight as puppies had 1.85 times the odds of being overweight as adults.

Dog Calorie Calculator: How Much Should Your Dog Eat?
Vets estimate how many calories a dog needs with a formula based on body weight and life stage. You don’t have to do the math yourself. Enter your dog’s weight, life stage and the calories per cup listed on your food bag, and the calculator below gives you a daily amount plus a per-meal portion you can set in your feeder.
Treat the result as a starting point. Confirm it with your vet, count treats as part of the total and do the rib check every few weeks.
How much should my dog eat?
How Many Times a Day Should a Dog Eat?
Most adult dogs do well on two meals a day, and vets generally recommend feeding at least twice daily (AKC). Puppies eat more often. Toy-breed puppies may need four to six small meals a day for their first three months, while medium and large-breed puppies usually eat three to four times a day before moving to two.
One interesting wrinkle: a Dog Aging Project study of more than 24,000 dogs found that dogs fed once a day had fewer age-related health problems. The researchers say it shows a link, not proof, so it isn’t a reason to change your routine without talking to your vet. Whatever schedule you choose, an automatic feeder splits the daily amount evenly across meals so the total stays the same.

Why an Automatic Feeder or Pre-Portioned Food Makes This Easier
Once you know your dog’s daily amount, the hard part is serving it the same way every day for years. Scoops get a little heaped, someone tops up the bowl, and a busy morning turns breakfast into a guess. An automatic feeder or pre-portioned food takes those small slips out of the routine.
In my house, the feeders made one change possible that I doubt I’d have kept up by hand. After Milo’s stomach trouble this summer, I split his food into four small meals a day: two dry meals from the Smart Feed and two wet meals from the FreshFeed. The feeders run that schedule without me thinking about it, and he’s been back to his old self since.
Benefits of an automatic dog feeder
- The same portion every meal. Once you set it, the amount doesn’t drift.
- Meals on time, even when you’re not. A late meeting or a slow morning doesn’t move dinner.
- Small, frequent meals are easy. Splitting the day into three or four meals takes no extra effort.
- No double feeding. Shared app access means everyone in the house can see that breakfast already happened.
- Help for fast eaters. Slow-feed settings spread a meal out for dogs who inhale their food.
Benefits of pre-portioned dog food
- No measuring at all. Each pack is sized for your dog, so the portion is decided before it reaches your kitchen.
- Plans built around your dog. Services like The Farmer’s Dog build plans from your dog’s age, weight, breed and activity level.
- An easy way to start. Half plans let you mix fresh food with your dog’s current kibble.
- It pairs with a fridge feeder. For small dogs, a refrigerated feeder like FreshFeed can serve pre-portioned meals on a schedule.
The 6 Best Automatic Dog Feeders
Two of these feeders run in my house every day with Milo, and a feeder that serves a cat’s kibble on time serves a small dog’s the same way. The other four I picked from specs, brand documentation and owner feedback, and I’ll be clear about which is which.

1. Editor’s Choice: PetSafe Smart Feed Automatic Dog and Cat Feeder (2nd Gen)
This is Milo’s dry-food feeder, and it has run his two small kibble meals a day for about a year and a half. Easy, reliable, consistent. If I had to pick one word, it’s a workhorse. I set it up once, and it has done its job every single day since without asking anything of me.
For dogs, the numbers that matter are 1/8 cup up to 4 cups per meal, up to 12 meals a day and a 24-cup hopper. Slow Feed spreads a meal over 15 minutes for dogs who inhale their food. The app warns you when food runs low, and everyone in the house can run the feeder from their own phone. In a house where two people both “just fed the dog,” that alone fixes a lot.
PetSafe recommends it for small to medium dogs. I have no complaints after 18 months, but there are a few trade-offs to know before you buy.

| Approx. Cost | $134.99 |

- Reliable day in, day out. Eighteen months of twice-daily meals in my house without a hiccup.
- Wide portion range. 1/8 cup to 4 cups per meal.
- Slow Feed. Spreads a meal over 15 minutes for fast eaters.
- Shared app access. Multiple phones can control it, which stops double feeding.
- Easy cleanup. Lid, hopper, bowl and bowl holder are top-rack dishwasher safe.
What to consider

- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only. Check your router settings before setup.
- Backup batteries sold separately. Add 4 D-cells if outages are common where you live.
With a 24-cup capacity, you won't have to refill the feeder after every meal. This pet feeder can dispense dry and semi-moist pet food thanks to the unique design of the conveyor that helps prevent food jams. This feeder also has low and empty food sensors, which will notify your smartphone when the pet feeder is running low or out of kibble. The Smart Feed Automatic Pet Feeder is compatible with Amazon Dash Replenishment to save you a trip to the store. With Amazon Dash Replenishment, the feeder will automatically reorder your pet's food when it senses it's low.

2. Best for Fresh or Wet Food: PetSafe FreshFeed Refrigerated Pet Feeder
I use this to feed Milo his portion-controlled wet food. We’ve used it for about three months, and it serves his two small wet meals a day right on schedule. It’s a little fridge with a rotating tray, so fresh food doesn’t sit out warming up.
It keeps food at 40°F, holds six meals, and works with wet food, fresh and raw diets and toppers. You set meal times in the PetSafe app, and the stainless steel inserts go in the dishwasher. It’s also the bridge to the fresh dog food picks further down. Pre-portioned fresh food can’t go in a dry hopper, and this is where it can go.
The meals are on the small side, so I’d only recommend it for small dogs. That’s my judgment, since PetSafe doesn’t give a size range. With six meals loaded, you’ll be refilling every few days.
PetSafe FreshFeed at a Glance

| Temperature | Keeps food at 40°F |

What works well
- Refrigerated. Holds wet, fresh and raw food at 40°F.
- Six scheduled meals. Small, frequent meals are easy to keep up.
- App scheduling. Set meal times and portions from your phone.

What to consider

- Premium price. $249.99 is a lot for a feeder.

3. Best for Precise Portions: Whisker Feeder-Robot
Milo hasn’t used this one, so this pick is based on research rather than a test. It earns its spot for one reason: portions adjust in 1/8-cup steps, which is about as fine as dry feeders get. When a vet says “cut back a little,” this feeder can actually cut back a little.
The hopper holds 32 cups (25 with the included insert), you can schedule one to eight meals a day, and it handles dry or semi-moist kibble up to 5/8 inch. The lid is tamper-resistant, which matters if you have a food thief. If you already use a Litter-Robot like I do, it runs in the same Whisker app.
Whisker Feeder-Robot at a Glance
| Best For | Small dogs who need small, exact portion changes |
| Food Type | Dry or semi-moist kibble up to 5/8 inch |
| Capacity | 32 cups (25 with insert) |
| Portions | 1/8-cup steps, 1 to 8 meals a day |
| Approx. Cost | $299 |
| Main Limitation | Premium price for a dry feeder |
What works well
- Fine portion control. 1/8-cup steps make small changes possible.
- Large hopper. 32 cups means fewer refills.
- Tamper-resistant lid. Helps keep clever dogs out.
- Whisker app. Same app as the Litter-Robot.
What to consider
- Price. At $299, it’s the priciest dry feeder here.
- Dry food only. No wet or fresh food.
- Kibble size limit. Pieces must be 5/8 inch or smaller.
The Feeder-Robot Automatic Pet Feeder is a smart, app-controlled feeder designed to make daily meals simple and consistent. You can schedule feedings, adjust portions, and trigger meals directly from the app or the unit itself. It holds up to 32 cups of dry food, making it ideal for multi-pet homes or longer stretches between refills. The feeder also includes a 90-day in-home trial and a 3-year WhiskerCare® protection plan for added peace of mind.
4. Best Budget Pick: Homerunpet PF20 Smart Feeder
If you want scheduled portions without spending much, the PF20 is the easiest place to start. It holds 4 liters, schedules one to eight meals a day through an app and uses a triple-lock seal to keep kibble fresh. Its smaller footprint suits apartments and small dogs.
Homerunpet PF20 at a Glance
| Best For | Small dogs on a budget |
| Food Type | Dry |
| Capacity | 4L |
| Meals per Day | 1 to 8 |
| Wi-Fi | 2.4GHz |
| Approx. Cost | $79.99 (stainless bowl) to $89.99 (porcelain bowl) |
| Main Limitation | Smaller hopper means more frequent refills |
What works well
- Lowest price here. From $79.99.
- Freshness seal. Triple-lock design helps keep kibble fresh.
- App scheduling. One to eight meals a day.
What to consider
- Smaller capacity. 4L means more refills for bigger eaters.
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only. Check your router first.
The Homerunpet Smart Automatic Pet Feeder makes feeding simple and flexible. Using the companion app, you can schedule meals, control portions, and track feeding history from anywhere. A triple freshness seal keeps kibble crisp for up to 30 days, while anti-jam dispensing ensures consistent portions. With up to six months of battery life, dishwasher-friendly removable parts, and your choice of stainless steel or porcelain bowls, it’s designed for reliable, hygienic everyday feeding.
5. Best for Two-Dog Homes: Oneisall Dual-Bowl Automatic Feeder
This one splits each meal into two bowls, so two dogs can eat at the same time without a standoff. It holds 5 liters (about 20 cups), schedules up to 10 meals a day and runs on 4 AA batteries if the power goes out. You can record a 10-second message to call your dogs to dinner, and it works on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi.
The catch for portion control: both bowls get the same amount. If one dog needs less food than the other, this isn’t the right setup.
Oneisall Dual-Bowl Feeder at a Glance
| Best For | Two small dogs who eat the same portion |
| Food Type | Dry |
| Capacity | 5L (about 20 cups) |
| Meals per Day | Up to 10 |
| Backup Power | 4 AA batteries |
| Approx. Cost | $69.99 |
| Main Limitation | Both bowls dispense the same portion |
What works well
- Two bowls at once. Fewer arguments at mealtime.
- Battery backup. 4 AA batteries keep meals coming during outages.
- Dual-band Wi-Fi. Works on 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
- Voice recording. A 10-second dinner call.
What to consider
- Same portion in both bowls. Not for dogs with different needs.
- Dry food only. No wet or fresh food.
The Oneisall Automatic Cat Feeder keeps your kitty’s meals perfectly on schedule with programmable feeding times, dual power options, and a quiet motor that won’t spook sensitive eaters. The stainless-steel bowl helps cut down on chin acne, while the top-locking lid keeps curious paws out—making it a great pick for both single- and multi-cat homes.
6. Best for Small, Frequent Meals: PETLIBRO Granary Smart Camera Feeder
Some dogs do better with lots of little meals, and this feeder can schedule up to 10 a day. It holds 5 liters of dry food, connects on 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi and has a camera so you can watch mealtime from your phone.
It has a power adapter plus a backup of 3 D batteries. On battery power, though, the camera and Wi-Fi switch off, so you can’t check in during an outage. One small oddity: one FAQ on PETLIBRO’s page says six meals, while the specs say ten.
PETLIBRO Granary Camera at a Glance
| Best For | Small dogs who do better on many small meals |
| Food Type | Dry |
| Capacity | 5L |
| Meals per Day | Up to 10 |
| Backup Power | 3 D batteries (camera and Wi-Fi off on battery) |
| Approx. Cost | $139.99 |
| Main Limitation | No app access during power outages |
What works well
- Up to 10 meals a day. Great for small, frequent feeding.
- Built-in camera. Watch mealtime from your phone.
- Dual-band Wi-Fi. Works on 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
What to consider
- Battery mode is basic. Camera and Wi-Fi go offline.
- Dry food only. No wet or fresh food.
- Mixed meal-count info. The brand page lists both 6 and 10.
The Petlibro Automatic Cat Feeder ensures your pet is fed on schedule, even when you're away. Its secure lid keeps food fresh and prevents theft, while a custom voice recording soothes your pet during meals. The feeder’s design prevents food clogs, and dual power options guarantee consistent operation, even during outages.
Got a big dog?
Most smart feeders, including every one on this list, are designed for small to medium dogs. The PetSafe Smart Feed comes closest, with up to 4 cups per meal and a 24-cup hopper.
If your dog’s meals don’t fit, weigh one full meal on a kitchen scale, mark that level on a dedicated scoop and make it the only scoop in the house. Portion control is the part that matters.
How to Choose an Automatic Dog Feeder
- Portion accuracy first. Look for small portion steps (1/8 cup is ideal) so you can make small adjustments.
- Your dog’s size. Check the maximum portion per meal against what your dog actually eats.
- Food type. Dry feeders hold kibble only. Wet, fresh and raw food needs a refrigerated model.
- Capacity. A bigger hopper means fewer refills, especially for larger dogs.
- More than one dog. Decide whether you need two bowls or separate feeders for dogs on different portions.
- Backup power. If outages happen where you live, choose a feeder with a battery backup and check what still works on battery.
- Wi-Fi band and cleaning. Many feeders connect on 2.4GHz only, and dishwasher-safe parts make it far more likely you’ll actually clean it.
Low-tech habits that help too
- Use a real measuring cup, not a coffee mug.
- Keep a small treat jar with a daily limit.
- Try a slow-feeder bowl or puzzle feeder for fast eaters.
- Book a weigh-in at every vet visit and write the number down.
Want the Scoop Already Measured? 5 Pre-Portioned Fresh Dog Foods
A feeder keeps portions steady. Pre-portioned fresh food skips the measuring step entirely, since each meal arrives sized for your dog. These work for dogs of any size, which makes them a good option for big dogs too. Pair one with a refrigerated feeder like FreshFeed if you have a small dog and the whole routine runs itself.
Two of these picks are raw. Some vets advise against raw diets, so check with yours before switching.

FAQ
How can I help my dog lose weight?
Start with a target weight and daily portion from your vet, then serve that exact amount every meal. An automatic dog feeder keeps the portion consistent.
- Count treats as part of the day’s food.
- Feeders with small portion steps make gradual cuts easier.
How long do dogs live?
About 11 years on average. A VetCompass study of more than 30,000 UK dogs put life expectancy at 11.23 years, with Labradors at 11.77.
- Lean-fed Labs in the Purina study lived a median of 13 years.
Does keeping a dog lean help it live longer?
Yes, according to the best evidence available. Lean-fed Labradors in the Purina Life Span Study lived a median of 1.8 years longer than their littermates.
- A 2019 study of more than 50,000 pet dogs found overweight dogs lived up to 2.5 years less.
Can I use an automatic feeder for wet, fresh or raw dog food?
Only if it’s refrigerated. Wet, fresh and raw food shouldn’t sit in a dry hopper.
Do automatic dog feeders work without Wi-Fi?
Most keep running a saved schedule, but you lose app control and alerts. Some feeders turn off the camera and Wi-Fi on battery power.
Are automatic feeders good for large dogs?
Most are built for small to medium dogs. Check the maximum portion per meal before buying for a large breed.
Can two dogs share one automatic feeder?
Yes, with limits. Dual-bowl feeders serve two dogs the same amount, but most feeders don’t stop one dog from eating the other’s food.
What are the biggest problems with automatic dog feeders?
Wi-Fi setup trouble, kibble jams and power outages are the most common issues.
Final Thoughts
- Choose a reliable dry feeder with a wide portion range if your dog eats kibble and you want a set-and-forget routine.
- Choose a refrigerated feeder if your small dog eats wet, fresh or raw food.
- Choose a feeder with 1/8-cup steps if your vet is fine-tuning your dog’s weight.
- Choose a dual-bowl feeder if you have two dogs on the same diet.
- Choose pre-portioned fresh food or a marked scoop if your dog is too big for most feeders.
A feeder won’t add years to your dog’s life on its own. It makes the right portion the default one, every meal, whether you’re home, at the lake or completely distracted. That’s exactly how it works in my house with Milo, and it works the same way for a dog. A quarter less food bought those Labs almost two more years. That’s worth a little setup.
